Why do I need Vitamin D?
As with all nutrients, our bodies need vitamin D from the environment to function properly. Vitamin D plays an important role in bone health by regulating with calcium absorption. This is a very clear relationship as its classic deficiency symptoms are diseases of the bones – rickets in children and osteoporosis in older adults (Bilke DD, 2014). However, with the discovery of vitamin D receptors in virtually every type of cell in the body (Pludowski et al. 2018), we have found that vitamin D affects many other parts of the body, like the immune system (Ginde 2009) and the cardiovascular system (Michaelsson et al. 2010). This combination of health benefits may be why those with higher vitamin D blood levels live better for longer (Garland 2014)
How do I get Vitamin D?
Vitamin D3 is the primary raw material to make active and usable Vitamin D. It is produced when the body is exposed to sunlight (ultraviolet B radiation sunlight). The precise amount of vitamin D3 produced will vary depending on factors such as skin tan, location in respect of the equator, season, and time of the day. Vitamin D can also come from our diet but there are very few foods in nature that actually contain it. The best sources of Vitamin D in nature are fatty fish like salmon, tuna, mackerel, as well as cheese, mushrooms, apples, egg yolks, sardines and foods that have been supplemented. Supplements are a potent source of Vitamin D and raise blood levels effectively.
How much do I need?
It depends! Some people may be able to reach adequate Vitamin D blood serum levels through sun exposure, while some may achieve it through a high-fish diet and fortified foods, and others may take a supplement. Most people will need a combination of two or three of these things. There isn't much consensus as to what sufficient levels look like with a large variance between sufficiency and toxicity. We recommend aiming to have a blood serum of at least 30ng/ml / 75nmol/L.
What if I already supplement or spend a lot of time outside?
Yes! Even those who live in sunnier climates and/or take Vitamin D supplements may still might be falling short because there are so many factors that can affect your Vitamin D blood serum level. The only way to truly know if your diet or environment is delivering what you need is to take one of our self tests.
What does the D3 Me test measure?
The blood serum level of Vitamin D that we present is equal to the concentration of total vitamin D level in plasma or serum and is measuring the total amount of 25(OH)D circulating in the bloodstream.
25(OH)D or calcifediol is the first metabolite of Vitamin D that has undergone hydroxylation in the liver to add a OH bond at carbon position 25 of the Vitamin D molecule. It is important to note that this test is not measuring the active form of Vitamin D, 1,25(OH)2D or calcitriol, this is the hormonal seco-steroidal metabolite that is responsible for many of the beneficial immune supporting properties
of Vitamin D.
Optimise for Health - Optimise your Vitamin D level in 3 Easy Steps
The sun is necessary for our skin to make Vitamin D. Problem is, modern humans no longer spend time with their bodies exposed to the sun each day as we evolved to do. This has resulted in concerning levels of Vitamin D deficiency in the modern human population. Many New Zealanders have a Vitamin D level that is either insufficient or deficient. Studies now suggest that optimal immune health & longevity require higher levels of Vitamin D3 than has previously been understood. This is something you need to know about! We are living the majority of our lives in houses and offices more than any time in Human history. Knowing your level is more important now than ever before, in particular in NZ and particularly if you have darker skin colour, are pregnant or over the age of 65.

What is the difference between ng/ml and nmol/L? Both ng/ml and nmol/L may be used on pathology reports to indicate a serum test result. In New Zealand it is most common to come across Vitamin D measured in nmol/L, in the USA, it is more common to come across ng/ml. In order to ascertain nmol/L, a multiplication factor of 2.5 may be applied to the ng/ml reading. For example, 100ng/ml = 250nmol/L. This becomes very important to look out for when reading literature and watching key note speeches that may have been filmed in other parts of the world. Our Smartphone app allows you to select the preferred unit for measurement.
If you have made it this far, hopefully you have concluded the following:
- Vitamin D is critical for optimal health.
- Vitamin D is stored in the body, it doesn't turn into expensive urine and become a complete waste of money.
- Society has misunderstood the oldest hormone on Earth.
- You should probably find out what your Vitamin D level is.
